Pregnancy in the Workplace
Addressing Employers’ Rights and Responsibilities
Tuesday, June 3, 2008
9a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Recent 2007 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission statistics show that pregnancy-bias complaints surged 14% last year to 5,587, up 40% from a decade ago. This constitutes the biggest annual increase in 13 years. The EEOC spokesman stated, “This may be only the tip of the iceberg.” The EEOC also received a staggering 20,400 pregnancy-based inquiries at its call center last year, excluding walk-ins. Thirty years after passage of the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act, there is still much confusion by employers and employees about what protection it provides. With changing workplace demographics and an increased assertiveness on this issue among working mothers, it is essential that employers know their legal rights and responsibilities.
This session will address the following:
• Pregnancy Discrimination Act – Historical development and landmark cases
• Adverse Treatment and Stereotyping – Defining legal prohibitions
o Hiring inquiries, Promotions, Workplace Treatment
• The Rights and Responsibilities of Comparable Leave and Benefits
o Benefits offered – Are you inadvertently violating the PDA?
o Pregnant workers as compared to other temporarily-disabled employees
• Must employers actually accommodate pregnancy under the PDA?
o Evaluating policies and practices to avoid inadvertent discrimination
o When can a leave of absence be forced?
• Taking Legitimate Disciplinary Action against a Pregnant Employee
Breakfast will be provided - Ameritel Inn – Boise Towne Square -7965 W. Emerald
Fee: MNW Members: $99 per person; $79 per person if two or more attendees; Non-Members: $119 per person; $99 if two or more
